Chasing Windmills: Building imaginary worlds

The 10th Annual Habla Institute will explore the concept of imagination in teaching and learning. We know that imagination is critical for students to be able to envision “positive social futures” and to be successful in a creative society. The design of the classroom space, the curriculum, lesson plans, centers—the entire educational experience at its very essence is an imaginative act. This year’s core texts, Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes and The Imaginary World of . . . by Keri Smith, will inspire us to imagine what might be possible in our classrooms.

Throughout the week participants will create with multiple art forms, marrying text with visual art, music, movement, and theatre. The institute is always shaped around core texts, but all institute activities can be applied to any grade level and text, preschool through adults.

All participants will have the opportunity to present and discuss their own work in a roundtable session. It’s optional, but if you’d like, be prepared to present an informal presentation of 10 minutes on any aspect of your work. Bring an artifact (photo, example of student work) to share. Teams are also welcome to share work collaboratively.

Pre-Institute Workshops
Every year artists and educators from around the world join us and share their best work in Pre-Institute workshops. These will take place on July 27-28 and are included in the overall institute cost.

Institute Documentation
Each year Habla collaborates with Arnold Aprill and his organization Radical Compliance Arts and Learning Laboratory to find innovative ways to document the institute. Visit here and learn more about the experience at the 2017 Teacher Institute: First Voices.
