Special Course: Día de Muertos

Immerse in Mexico's most beautiful tradition.

Every year, Mexico celebrates one of its most treasured traditions: Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). More than a holiday, it is a celebration of love, remembrance, family, and life itself.

In Yucatán, this tradition takes on a unique identity known as Hanal Pixán, a Mayan celebration whose name means "Food for the Souls." It is a time when families honor their loved ones by preparing traditional foods, creating colorful altars, and sharing stories that keep their memories alive.

Throughout the city, parks, museums, cemeteries, and public squares come alive with beautifully decorated altars, cultural performances, traditional music and dance, local markets, and community celebrations that invite everyone to experience the richness of this extraordinary tradition.

At Habla, we believe that language and culture are inseparable. During this special week, your Spanish classes naturally incorporate Día de Muertos traditions, allowing you to develop your language skills while experiencing authentic Mexican culture firsthand.

Throughout the week, you'll combine your daily Spanish classes with immersive cultural experiences designed to help you experience these traditions from the inside— not simply as a visitor, but as part of our community.

During the week, you'll have the opportunity to:

Learn about the history, traditions, and symbolism of Día de Muertos and Hanal Pixán.

Visit the impressive monumental altar in Mérida's historic city center.

Take part in a hands-on traditional Mexican cooking class.

Create an authentic Día de Muertos altar together.

Practice Spanish through conversations, storytelling, readings, and cultural discussions.

Share a beautiful closing celebration with classmates, teachers, and staff.

Día de Muertos is offered once a year during the final week of October or the first of November. Space is limited for this program.

Schedule

Monday – Friday (9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.)
Your Spanish classes take place Monday to Friday in small groups organized by language level.

Around 11:00 a.m.
We'll take a short break to enjoy lunch and spend time together before continuing with the remainder of the day's lessons.
